A website won’t load? Try these checks first
First find out where the problem is. Then try the fix that matches it—without changing a bunch of settings at once.
A page that won’t open can be caused by the website, your browser, your device, or your internet connection. These checks help separate those possibilities.
1. See whether it’s only one website
Open another website you use regularly.
- Other sites load: the issue may be with that particular website or its address. Try again in a few minutes.
- No sites load: check whether your device is still connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
2. Check the address and reload once
Look for a typing mistake in the address. If you opened the site from a saved bookmark, search for the site by its name and compare the address. Then reload the page once.
If the browser shows a security warning, don’t bypass it or enter passwords or payment details. The warning may indicate a problem with the site’s security certificate.
3. Compare browsers
Open the same page in a private or incognito window. If it works there, an extension or saved site data may be involved. You can also try another browser.
If another browser works, update the affected browser. If the problem is limited to one site, clear that site’s stored data rather than deleting all browsing data; this may sign you out of that site.
4. Compare networks or devices
If it’s safe and available, try the site on another device or switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the other way around).
- It works on another network: your router, network settings, or internet provider may be involved.
- It fails on several devices and networks: the website itself may be temporarily unavailable.
5. Restart only what the checks point to
Restart the affected phone or computer. If several devices on the same Wi-Fi cannot reach websites, restart your router using its normal power procedure, then wait for it to reconnect.
If the connection still fails across devices, check your internet provider’s service status or contact its support. Avoid factory-resetting your router unless your provider or device maker tells you to; that can erase connection settings.
These are general troubleshooting steps. Menu names vary by browser, phone, and computer.
